A Year Ago Today...

It still seems crazy to me that I have been back from my big around-the-world trip for a year now!  It feels like just yesterday that I got back and like a million years ago- like I can't remember life before I left and experienced and saw so many amazing things.  Since July I've been playing a fun game in my head of "Where was I a year ago today?"  Everyday when I wake up I try and remember where in the world I was a year ago today and a great way for me to remember is my travelogue on this blog.  The blog was posted in a delay because I didn't always have internet so I would make multiple posts ahead of time (for example when my Beijing posts went up in December I was already in Borneo).  I am so grateful to all of my readers for inspiring me to do this and especially on those days when I was so sick and so frustrated with the slow internet and wanted to give up on this blog you guys kept me going and the memories i have on here are so special to me.  So I thought I'd let you guys in on the game.  Below is a repost about what I did one year ago today.  What am I doing today you may ask?  Attending the amazing Photo Plus Expo and making great connections and attending a bunch of seminars so I can keep bringing you all more great stories and pictures!  Being in a conference center may not compare to hiking on a crisp fall day on the Great Wall of China, but hopefully everything I learn tomorrow will help me get back to exploring these crazy places and my other great love making great intimate family and couple portraits of amazing people in my hometown of NYC!

It was one of those perfect crisp fall days with a light breeze passing through the bright red and yellow leaves of the fall foliage. I felt like I was in Vermont or Massachusetts, but I wasn’t in New England- I was just two hours outside of Beijing at one of the coolest ancient sites I have ever visited: The Great Wall of China. It was a weekday in mid fall and there were hardly any other tourists around. I have heard so many stories of people’s experiences on the Great Wall both good and bad. While I may have certain qualms about other ancient historical sites I visited in China, this one was perfect.

When visiting the great wall there are a few spots you can pick to visit from Beijing. I chose Mutianyu and would highly recommend it to others. It is a little farther from the city, but so worth it because it is not too crowded and the scenery is stunning. Mutianyu has two cable car rides, one enclosed, one open, much like a ski lift, that you can take to get up and down the hill to the wall. There is also a toboggan slide that you can take down the hill at the same point as the open gondola. The distance between the two gondolas is about 3.5 meters so a very nice walk (which is what I did) is to go up the open gondola, walk to the closed one, which is at a high point giving a good panorama and then walk back and take the toboggan down, a 7 meter trip in total (about 4.4 miles). It is hard to measure the exact distance because the wall is almost all steep stairs leading up then down and zigzagging back and forth. If this is the path you choose to take I would suggest budgeting the entire day for it including driving time to and from the wall. A little tip- there are bathrooms up on top the mountain at the wall, but of course they are not western toilets and have no toilet paper so to all my girls out there- don’t forget some tissues in your purse and I would also suggest some hand sanitizer.

Walking the wall was amazing, but definitely a hike- I would suggest comfortable shoes and checking the weather to make sure you are dressed for the cold or heat depending on when you go, because it can snow in the winter and be sweltering in the summer. My guide gave up our trek on last stretch of the wall, which consisted entirely of really steep stairs going up and waited for me on the steps below while I went up alone. It was exhausting, but it was really beautiful from the top and it was a great sense of accomplishment! I felt like Rocky when he finally runs up the stairs and I did the double fist pump in the air to celebrate.

Then I walked back exhausted, but pleased and went down the mountain on the toboggan. You control how fast you go by pulling on a brake so I didn't go too fast because I was petrified of flipping over, but I did go fast around a few straight bits, which was really fun. If you read my posts about my safari in Africa you know that I spent most of my time humming the Lion King soundtrack and you can bet I walked around the wall humming Be a Man from Mulan, which I then went back to my hotel and watched on itunes. Overall a perfect day!

New York City Baby Photography, Tutus and Bows!

This shoot is from back in August, but definitely some of my favorite baby portraits!  A born model she was a natural in front of the camera and struck adorable poses from the second the camera was on her.  Great 1st Birthday shoot!

New York City Children's Photography, Halloween

Happy October! Today officially marks my favorite month in New York City. The temperature is cooling, the leaves are changing and most importantly it’s almost Halloween! When I was a child my mom would take portraits of me every year before I went out trick-or-treating on Halloween. Every time I visit home I still flip through my Halloween photo album remembering all my fun (and embarrassing costumes) and am so grateful to have all these memories on film! This year for Halloween no more fussing with your camera before trick-or-treating or forgetting to take pictures of your kids in their costumes! Whether this is your little one’s first Halloween or you have a seasoned trick-or-treater on your hands come create a unique portrait and make your Halloween memories extra special!

The Halloween Pop Up Portrait Studio in Tribeca will be running for the whole month of October and if you can’t make it downtown I can also travel to your home for an On Location photo shoot. For more information and to book a session you can email me at Rebecca@rebeccayale.com or give me a call at 310.562.8377. Book with one or more friends and all receive 10% off your package! So be sure to tell all your friends!

Happy (almost) Halloween!
All the best,
Rebecca
