One of the joys of living in New York City is getting to photograph in all the cool different neighborhoods, which each have their own unique flavor. For Michelle and James engagement session we shot around two neighborhoods that had a lot of meaning to them, where they met and where they live now. We had so much fun on a beautiful Spring day on the first weekend the trees started to blossom and shot all over the East Village even visiting the restaurant where they had their first date and then we drove out to Red Hook and wandered around the streets till sunset when we headed to their roof for the gorgeous view of the city in the distance.

New Studio and Website!

2014 has been a really big and exciting year for me so far.  I made a huge decision earlier in the year to throw all of my focus, attention and love only into things I am truly passionate about.  That means turning down some work and being a little more selective in what I take on, which is a little terrifying, but also completely exhilarating and in the end rewarding.  I am so so lucky to love what I do and have such amazing clients who let me do my thing.  When I was just starting out I wanted to be everything to everyone and it took time to realize that I don’t have to be that and that will only leave me and my clients frustrated.  I am not a sears portrait photographer who’s going to take that family photo of everyone sitting on the couch smiling looking straightforward.  I’m going to get the real moment of you all cuddling on the couch laughing and just being authentic.  I pinch myself everyday that I have clients who love and appreciate my style.  A big component to shooting what I love is how I shoot it, and this year I have been shooting more and more film and loving it!  I just wrote a post about why I shoot film that you can check out here so I won’t go into it too much here, but reconnecting with why I love photography and taking the time to shoot film has been a wonderful experience that has pushed my work to a new level.  Another big change that happened this year is a total redesign to my studio space.  I used to shoot a lot in studio and my space was pretty cramped and not great to meet with people in because of that, but now that I’m not shooting in the studio any more I had the opportunity to makeover my place and turn it into a warm open space to meet with my clients and talk all about their weddings while sipping a glass of wine or an espresso.  I redesigned the space while also rebranding my website so I think they actually feel quite similar which I love!  I got all my camera equipment out of the drawers it used to be hidden it and onto beautiful wooden shelves mixed in with some of my most cherished items including souvenirs from my travels around the world, my grandfather’s vintage cameras and my great grandmother’s vase from Russia.   I am also so excited to share a photo of my brand new gold foil letterpress stationery made by the wonderful Plumbum Press!  Here’s a little tour of my new space and some screenshots of my new site!  Check out www.rebeccayalephotography.com to explore the whole new site.

One Year of Owen, New York City Fine Art Family Photography

I’ve had the supreme pleasure over the last year of photographing my cousin’s baby once a month for his first year.  Owen is the first baby in my immediate family and it has been such an incredible experience for me.  He is just the sweetest little bundle of cuteness and is just one of the happiest babies I’ve ever been around.  He was born last April just a month after my grandmother and childhood dog passed away and having new life to celebrate was so special and I like to think he even looks a bit like my grandparents.  His middle name Kenneth, is named after my grandfather who passed away two years ago and I like to think that his little baby pompadour/comb-over that he has sported for much of his first year is an homage to his namesake.  Photographing Owen over the last year has produced some of my favorite images ever and it’s been such a pleasure to feel relaxed and not pressured while I’m shooting.  I really get to focus on the special little moments, which make for the best photos anyway.  The exercise has truly made my professional work better and reminds me to take a breath slow down and look for the little moments that are so unique to each and every kid.  I can’t wait for walking and talking this year and will keep posting photos, although somewhat less frequent of year two!
